“Deep Six” by Clive Cussler
Facebook friend and author, Robin Burcell is co-writing a new Clive Cussler book due out in Sept 2016. That made me look at the last time I read a Cussler book…..EIGHT years ago! Yikes, time flies. Time to start catching up.
I had “Deep Six” in the garage patiently waiting in line to be read. Now was the time. 🙂
In the first plot-line…..
Dirk Pitt, Al Giordino, and the NUMA organization are investigating a toxic spill in the Pacific Ocean that has the potential to wipe out life in much of the ocean, and possibly the world.
Finding the source, a ship, beached on an island in Alaska. The Pilottown was lost at sea many years ago with a deadly cargo of nerve gas in it’s holds. That nerve gas is now leaking.
Before they can stop the leak an earthquake rattles the old ship and one of Dirk’s friend’s protective clothing breaks…and she dies.
Dirk is pissed and is determined to find who the ship last belonged to.
Pulling in all of his NUMA resources, Dirk finds out that a company from Korea, Bouganville Shipping, was the last owner.
In a second plot-line….
The President , Vice President (Margolin), the Speaker of the House (Moran), and an influential Senator (Larimer) are meeting on the Presidential Yacht on the Potomac. Late at night, the top four people in line for the Presidency of the United States disappear right under the noses of the Secret Service detail “protecting” them. The U.S. Gov’t is thrown into chaos, but, keeps the disappearance secret for as long as they can. The Secretary of State (Oates) is now the acting President.
In a third plot-line…..
The Russians have gathered the top Russian mind control scientist, Lugovoy, setting him and his team up in a state-of-the-art laboratory somewhere in the U.S.
In a fourth plot-line…..
The Korean shipping company mentioned above is working with the Russian President and Lugovoy in return for an immense amount of gold.
All the plot-lines converge as the President of the United States, now being controlled by the Russians, throws the U.S. into a military controlled state.
The only people who can stop the madness are Pitt and Giordino.
“Deep Six” is an exciting, wide ranging, adventure and interesting look at technology from the 1980’s. As I was reading this, I was keenly aware of the fact that there were no cell phones and no Internet at the time of writing (and the World Trade Center buildings were still standing). In many books, where technology is not the main focus, this is not a problem, but, I suppose books with a technology component do get “old”.
