“The 5th Wave” by Rick Yancey
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
(Aliens take over the World)
Aliens invade. The alien mothership hovers in space until it decides to attack. But it does so slowly and methodically.
The 1st Wave: Lights Out: A massive Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) takes out all electronics crashing planes and trains and automobiles while killing hundreds of thousands.
The 2nd Wave: Surf’s Up: Massive earthquake generated tidal waves kill millions living close to shore.
The 3rd Wave: Pestilence: An ebola like disease kills billions. Only those immune to the disease survive.
The 4th Wave: Silencer: Alien assassins roam the globe killing all the humans they can find.
Sixteen year old Cassie Sullivan has survived. Her mother and father are dead and her 5 year old brother, Sammy, has been taken to a safe haven by soldiers in yellow school buses.
Cassie is surviving by moving constantly and killing whoever crosses her path. Her goal is to find her brother who she believes may have been taken to Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio.
An Alien silencer finds Cassie and shoots her in the leg. Cassie lives, but, nearly dies later in a snowstorm.
Evan Walker saves Cassie and nurses her back to health in his home in rural Ohio. Evan lost his whole family and his girlfriend. Evan and Cassie form a deep bond and eventually team up to try to find Sammy.
Ben Parish, Zombie, is being trained at Camp Haven to kill aliens. Zombie is the squad leader of kids being trained to save humanity. Ben is also the secret crush of Cassie from high school. Sammy joins his squad.
“The 5th Wave” is an extremely interesting read with twists and turns galore. Nothing is what it seems to be and trusted friends may not be who they seem to be.
The enemy looks, and acts, just like us.
They are us.
To find out what happens you can read to the book or go see the movie that came out in Feb 2016. It is because of the movie that I learned about the book (I did almost the same for Harry Potter…long story).
